Nintendo has just landed a major honor in Japan, and they’re stealing that honor from…themselves.

Thanks to Nintendo’s most recent fiscal results, we know that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 40.17 million units worldwide. 10,450,000 of those units were sold in Japan alone, and that’s enough to rack up an incredible win for Nintendo.

Japan’s previous best-selling game of all-time was actually three games in one. Pokémon Red/Green/Blue saw combined sales of 10,230,000 when all was said and done. They held onto that top spot for decades upon decades, but now Animal Crossing: New Horizons has swooped in to steal the crown.

Is it possible Pokémon Scarlet/Violet could eventually topple Animal Crossing: New Horizons? We’ll be watching the next few months closely to see how things play out!

I don’t think Scarlet/Violet is going usurp it, it’s going to take some special circumstances. Congrats to AC!

Nothing released from here out on Switch will outsell Animal Crossing: New Horizon. For numerous reasons like Switch is past its peak now and AC: NH benefitted from exceptional circumstances upon release.

I feel pretty certain that no console game will ever outsell ACNH now. I'd love to be proven wrong.
