God of War: Ragnarok recently came out for PS4 and PS5, and it seems to be garnering some fantastic review scores. In an interview with IGN, God of War: Ragnarok director Eric Williams revealed that he has to give credit where credit’s due, as there are some classic NES games that helped inspired Kratos’ latest journey.

According to Williams, these are the 5 games that helped form the building blocks of what God of War: Ragnarok became.

  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
  • Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!
  • Baseball Stars
  • River City Ransom

Anyone who owned an NES back in the day most likely had a few of these titles, but there’s no doubt they’ll be familiar to 80s/90s kids. I played all but Baseball Stars in the day, but I certainly had some friends who owned copies.

If you’re wondering how Baseball Stars and the other titles helped pave the way for God of War: Ragnarok, you can check out IGN’s interview with Williams here.
