About one week ago, Nintendo gave Mario Kart 7 an update out of nowhere. This was the first update the game had received in 10 years, which led many to wonder what Nintendo was up to. While Nintendo said the update dealt with “several issues to improve the gameplay experience,” dataminers have come up with some more substantial details.

It appears the main purpose of the Version 1.2 update was to tweak elements related to online play. Dataminers have confirmed that changes were made to the netcode, but specifics were not shared. It seems likely Nintendo made some changes in order to keep players safe while playing online, but we may never know the full details.
