Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the game to beat on the Switch. The Mario Kart franchise has been a stellar mover for Nintendo in general, but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is next-level. Despite being a revamped version of Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has reached a whopping 48+ million sold worldwide. There’s no other greater long-tail seller for Nintendo, and we have even more proof of that today from Japan.

We shared the weekly Japanese sales data earlier today, and it gave us yet another look at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The title sold another 42k units in the past week, which is staggering in and of itself, considering the game originally launched on Switch in 2017. The thing is, that 42k units this week helped Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reach a new milestone.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has now hit 5 million units sold in Japan alone. There are other Switch games in Japan that have surpassed the 5 million mark, but no other Switch games have amassed nearly 50 million worldwide. That 5 million in Japan helps Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continue down its path of domination, and there’s no doubt the title has pulled in another few million units sold around the world during this holiday season.

That's 5 million physical sales in Japan. There's probably a couple million more in digital downloads as well. Every rose has its thorn though. It's a Wii U port, and its success means we probably won't see MK9/Nintendo Kart All-Stars until next generation.
