A deep dive into the kode
Mortal Kombat II was one of the most anticipated game sequels ever released back in 1993, as the original Mortal Kombat had become a worldwide phenomenon. While Mortal Kombat II more than delivered on fan expectations, it appears there were even grander plans during development.
29 years after Mortal Kombat II released, the game’s source code has found its way online. As you might expect, tons of Mortal Kombat fans have gone pouring through the game’s code (kode?) to see what secrets could be unearthed. Turns out there was quite a bit of content left on the kutting room floor.
Discovered among the source code was evidence of new moves, combos, stages and more. There’s even an odd, blue-skinned version of Scorpion hiding in the game’s code, but there’s no explanation as to who the character is or what he’s doing hiding behind the scenes.
