Back in the Summer of 2022, Bandai Namco brought Switch owners a one-two punch with the release of KLONOA Phantasy Reverie Series. That package includes revamped versions of two PS2 titles; KLONOA: Door to Phantomile and KLONOA 2: Lunatea’s Veil.

You might think bringing those games to modern platforms would be an easy task, but there were some unique challenges that had to be tackled. In particular, the lighting of KLONOA 2 caused some headaches for the dev team.

In an interview with Retro Gamer magazine, Ryo Ishida, producer of Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, spoke up about how the team struggled to get things right.

“One of the many significant challenges that we had with remastering Klonoa 2 is the adjustment of stage lighting. When porting the PlayStation 2 version of the game to the current-gen platforms, there was the problem of dim lighting in certain areas. You might think we could just increase the lighting of the whole area, but as we needed to also take care of preserving the intended atmospheres and mood in the original game, we put a lot of time and effort into adjusting those.”
