Pokémon: Detective Pikachu hit theaters back in 2019 and was a modest success. Following the film’s release, we had heard that a sequel was in the works. Now we’re all the way in 2023 and there hasn’t been a peep about the follow up. Many have worried the film was put on ice, but thankfully, that’s not the case.

The gang at Polygon reached out to Legendary Entertainment for an update on the film, and the company confirmed that the sequel is “in active development.” Unfortunately, that’s all the new information that was shared, which leaves us pretty much the same place we were years ago.

The original writers for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, definitely have an interest in working on the sequel, but it seems there are some hurdles to overcome. According to the duo, writing for the sequel ism “an ongoing conversation that is still not over to this day.” As you might have guessed, the project coming together involves, “a lot of big studio, corporate Pokémon rights things” that the duo has no insight on.
