The official numbers for the videogame industry in the United States have come in, and it was another hot month. Fire Emblem Engage performed exceptionally well, as did Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. - Total spending: $4.3 billion, down 5% year-on-year
- Software: $3.8 billion, down 5%
- Hardware: $393, flat year-on-year
- Accessories: $165 million, down 14%
Highlights
- January 2023 marks the first time the U.S. video game market experienced a year-on-year decline since September 2022
- PlayStation 5 was the U.S. market’s best-selling hardware platform of January 2023 in both unit and dollar sales, with Switch ranking 2nd across both measures
- U.S. video game hardware spending was flat compared to a year ago, at $393 million. Growth in PlayStation 5 and Switch hardware spending was offset by declines across other platforms.
