LIVE A LIVE, the 1994 RPG for the Super Famicom, never got to see release outside of Japan. After years of hardcore RPG fans begging for a port or remake, the impossible is finally happening. LIVE A LIVE is coming to Switch on July 22nd, 2022, and it’s a full-on remake using Square Enix’s HD-2D visual approach.

In an interview with Famitsu, LIVE A LIVE director Takashi Tokita was asked how this remake came to be. It turns out Tokita was pushing for a remake for quite some time, but the stars only just aligned to make things happen. You can read Tokita’s statement below, as translated by NintendoEverything.

I’ve pushed internally for a remake or sequel a number of times, but the circumstances never quite worked and the idea was abandoned. One of the big reasons we were able to create the remake was because we joined up with Mr. Asano’s team, who was responsible for the HD-2D RPG Octopath Traveler from four years ago. When we were planning the project, we wondered if we could use HD-2D to create a Live A Live remake, and after discussing with them we made it a reality.
