The weekend isn’t over yet, but it appears that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is going to beat projections that were set at the start of the weekend.

Just a couple of days ago, industry professionals were crunching the imaginary numbers, and they were thinking Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would come in at around $60-65 million domestically for the opening weekend. Now with Friday and Saturday’s tallies in, it seems more likely that Sonic is going to speed past that estimate.

As things stand right now, it seems Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is going to pull in $71 million domestically. That’s certainly a fantastic opening weekend, especially when you consider the first film did $58 million in 3 days. Furthermore, if that figure is hit, it would give Sonic the Hedgehog 2 the honor of being the biggest video game movie opening ever.

No matter how you look at it, there’s no denying that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been a bigger opening success than the original, which means things are certainly heading in the right direction!

That is a surprise considering such classics as Super Mario Bros., Doom, and BloodRayne.
