The Super Mario Bros. movie is off to an incredibly great start domestically.

We’re still in opening day for the Super Mario Bros. movie, but here in the states it’s estimated the film will take in roughly $26 million. Extrapolating data would put the movie at a $86.2M 3-day, and $127.5M Wednesday through Sunday haul. To put things in perspective, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brought in $26.3M for a Friday launch, but that figure also included Thursday previews.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 currently holds the 3-day record for a videogame feature adaptation with $72.1M. If the data analysts are sharing plays out, we could see the Mario movie take the new #1 position for a 3-day haul.

If the Super Mario Bros. movie can continue this strong showing, then Illumination is going to be incredibly happy. Despicable Me 2 managed to bring in $143M for its first 5-days, and if Mario does hit that $127M mark, it would be a second-place debut for the company.
