Mickey has received all sorts of makeovers throughout the decades, and his next iteration is going to appear in Disney Illusion Island this Summer. While some may see what Mickey and the gang look like and tie it to the more recent Mickey animated shorts, in an interview with Eurogamer, Dlala CEO and creative director Aj Grand-Scrutto says the inspiration for their take on crew actually comes from nearly 100 years ago.

“We love the classic, cheeky Mickey: 1930s-1940s, white-faced Mickey where he’s a little bit naughty. What we wanted to do is obviously keep the heritage in mind, think about those classic designs, and then redesign them specifically for the gameplay. We wanted to harken back to Mickey’s heritage but really do a fresh take on it.”

I feel like that's pretty much exactly what they've achieved. The whole crew of characters looks awesome.
