Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 might be the #1 movie in the world right now, but the Super Mario Bros. Movie is still racking up incredible figures at the box office.

As it stands today, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now pulled in $1.21 billion worldwide, which is good enough for another record. This figure makes the film the 4th biggest animated release ever, as it has now surpassed the box office of the 2015 Minions movie.

Wondering what Mario has left to topple for #1 Here’s the film’s standing in Mario’s way.

  1. “Frozen II” (2019) – $1.450 billion worldwide box office gross
  2. “Frozen” (2013) – $1.276 billion worldwide box office gross
  3. “The Incredibles 2” (2018) – $1.243 billion worldwide box office gross

I knew it did well but I had no idea it did that well. I think it is sad that Frozen II did that well, because now Disney might be tempted to come with Frozen III at some point. They sort of lost me with the second movie. I mean it was beautifully made but the story didn't do it anymore for me. I hope a 2nd Mario movie won't go weak in the story department so we can look forward to even a third Mario movie.

Way to go Mario & Luigi!! Unfortunately a 3rd Frozen movie has already been confirmed, as well as Toy Story 5.

Oh, didn't read on to your comment. XD

and @aussiemcbucket, ooh I didn't know.. As I said, for me it might not be possible to fix it anymore. I hope with Zootopia 2 they'll do a lot better. Toy Story 3 was also a let down for me but 4 I found more enjoyable again. And I'm sad about Ralph, I think that one either can't be fixed anymore after the second movie.

So follow up movies aren't always the best. It'll be quite risky to do one if you want the story to grow stronger. That is why it'll be interesting to see if Nintendo and Illumination can actually pull that off.
