Capcom knew they wanted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Mega Man Battle Network series, which came about two years ago. While they might not have had much to offer during the actual anniversary, that timing did kick off some major plans inside Capcom, and it was fueled by the fans.

In a 4Gamer interview with Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection director Masakazu Eguchi, we learned that development on the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection kicked off 2 years back with the 20th anniversary of the franchise. It appears the real impetus for that project came from fan requests.

Eguchi mentions that there were always plans for some ports, but the voice of the fans grew louder and louder as the 20th anniversary drew near. This helped Capcom realize that there was a considerable desire for some sort of special project for Battle Network diehards, which in turn, led to the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection.

Meanwhile when asked about a Mega Man 12, Mega Man X9, or Mega Man Legends 3.

Capcom's HQ: *sounds of crickets* ...How about Mega Man 1-10 again for PS6, Xbox Next, and Nintendo Next?
