While there have been plenty of games over the years that use music as a mechanic, none of them have gone all-out with the musical approach. That’s exactly what Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical does, and as you can imagine, it was a bit of a nightmare to compose for.

Composer Austin Wintory shared a look at a chart he created to help him tackle the tunes of Stray Gods. While the above chart certainly looks complicated at first, it only gets worse when you realize that this represents just one song in the game!

As players make their way through the game and various songs, they make choices that impact the direction of the story alongside the song. This means multiple branching paths have to be created for each song, and somehow the song bits still have to flow together into something that sounds good.

Even if you’re not a fan of musicals or have no interest in Stray Gods, you have to respect the insane amount of work that went into bringing this project together.
