It seems unbelievable, but we’re already halfway through 2023. That means we’ve got 6 months’ worth of sales data to pick through for the game industry, which gives us quite a good look at how things are going for some big-name games.

With the numbers officially crunched, we have a breakdown of the top 15 best-selling retail games in Japan for 2023 so far. As you might suspect, the list is chock-full of Switch titles. That said, do you think you can guess them all before you take a look?

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is sitting very pretty at the top of the charts, and it’ll no doubt remain in the top 3 for the rest of the year. The real question is if anything can come along and topple it. The only possibility I can think of is Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Either way, it’s going to be a very great year for Nintendo, and one hell of a battle at the top of the charts!

Is Final Fantasy no longer a huge thing in Japan? I know it hasn't been out as long as Tears of the Kingdom, but it used to be that when a Final Fantasy game released in Japan it was a massive deal.

@hawk

Think FF16 is the fastest selling PS5 exclusive in Japan ever. Unsure though how many PS5s there are VS Switch's though, but pretty sure the Switch is still on top.

Fastest selling PS5 game doesn't really mean much considering the console sold a little over 3 million there. Switch sits at roughly 30 million.

Yeah I kinda hinted at that! But the console also is selling fast there these days. Anyway it seems that those who have the PS5 really are into FF16, if that's anything to go by.
