The latest installment in the Disgaea series, Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless, is coming to Switch on October 3rd, 2023. Fans will have to wait patiently until then to go hands-on with this installment, but rest assured that the dev team is hard at work on bringing the game over. That includes the localization team, which has been dealing with some particularly challenging translation scenarios.

In an interview with Siliconera, Senior Localization Editor Steve Carlton spoke up about two instances in Disgaea 7 that presented unique challenges when translating into English. Thankfully, the team has dealt with some tough situations before, and they’re up to the challenge once again.

One such challenge came in the form of deciding how to spell Pirilika’s mispronunciation of Japanese food. We wanted to make sure that they were both spelled wrong in the dialogue boxes, and sounded wrong when heard in the voice acting. Another example is Yayaka, the Gambling Magistrate, because she speaks in two dialects, so we set out to replicate these with appropriate American accents, and the types of phrases that are commonly used with those accents.
