Sea of Stars is no doubt inspired by some of the all-time RPG greats from the 16-bit era. While there are a number of classic titles that helped pave the way for Sea of Stars, many are quick to mention Chrono Trigger as the main influence. Chrono Trigger has stood the test of time and is still considered to be one of the greatest RPGs ever released, so it’s no surprise to hear the Sea of Stars team is feeling a bit nervous about the comparisons.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, Thierry Boulanger, Creative Director of Sea of Stars, opens up about the comparisons to Chrono Trigger in particular. While it’s obviously an honor to be compared to one of gaming’s greatest titles, it’s also an extremely intimidating situation as well.

So to your question, is it intimidating? Absolutely. We understand the mandate that people decided was on us now, which is, “Give me, make me feel that way again.” And part of that challenge is what I can’t do is make you be nine years old again. (laughs) We don’t have those ingredients so what we should do is create something that is as good as our memories of those games.
