Masahiro Sakurai is back with another installment in his game development video series. This time around, he’s shared a video that fits into the ‘Animation’ category, where he dives into details about the animation that occurs when characters take damage.

It’s important to make the damaged pose of a character look noticeably different than the standby pose, and how big the attack is changes the reaction the character will have; this way, players can easily tell that the character has been hit and how big the attack was. The video also goes into some of the problems that Sakurai encountered regarding damage animation while developing Smash Bros, such as how far a hitbox can reach and the different body types he had to deal with since Smash Bros has characters from many series that don’t necessarily have a humanoid body.
