Octopath Traveler 2's team talks the pressures and challenge of crafting a sequel
How do you top an amazing debut?
Square Enix wowed Switch owners early on with Octopath Traveler, which was a blend of old and new ideas to create a unique RPG experience. A few years after that came Octopath Traveler, which managed to up the ante and provide an equally stellar, if not superior adventure in all regards.
Not surprisingly, coming up with a sequel to a critically-acclaimed debut is quite the monumental task. The team behind the original game didn’t want to just copy and past what worked in the first title, so they set out to improve, change, and build upon the incredibly strong base for an even more impressive sequel.
In a new blog from Square Enix, the Octopath Traveler 2 team opens up on the massive amount of work they took on to build the sophomore outing. We get to hear from Keisuke Miyauchi (Director/ACQUIRE Corp.),Yasunori Nishiki (Composer), Naoki Ikushima (Character Design/SQUARE ENIX) and Kakunoshin Futsuzawa (Scenario Writer/SQUARE ENIX) on the challenges each faced when trying to one-up their own work from just a few years ago.
