Just over a week ago, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland was revealed. Many thought this was a modern-day re-release of a classic NES game, but that’s not the case at all. Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is actually a brand-new game that’s not only in the works for the NES, but the Switch as well.

While it’s always surprising to see a new NES game, it’s especially surprising to see a new Rugrats title. While there’s a modern-day Rugrats cartoon airing, this game is focused on the original release from the 90s. In an interview with Nintendo Life, developer Tomas Guinan explains why now’s the time for a retro-styled Rugrats adventure.

Honestly, why NOT Rugrats? Everybody loves Rugrats, right? It sort of started out that the first team behind The MIX Games developed and released together was Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl. We released that through Limited Run Games, and it did quite well, so we wanted to look for more retro licenses that deserve to have this kind of treatment — to have a retro game made. Rugrats was just a great fit.
