Mineko’s Night Market has been in development for a very long time. We learned about the Switch release a few years back, but it turns out the game has actually been in the works for over 8 years now. Thankfully, that long road is coming to an end today, as Mineko’s Night Market is launching in just a matter of hours.

Wondering why it took the dev team so long to bring Mineko’s Night Market to fruition? In an interview with Polygon, we learned that the devs were experiencing a considerable bit of burnout early on, which is when they decided to step away for a bit for mental health reasons. Humble Games, publisher of the title, was more than happy to let the team regroup and get back to a better mental space.

Obviously the developers eventually set things straight and got back to work, bringing us to launch day. When you learn about just how long the team has been cracking away at this title, you can see why they were feeling the pressure years back. That goes hand-in-hand with the many early ideas of what Mineko’s Night Market could be, including a 3D side-scroller.

The original game was 3D, a side-scroller, and there was something a little bit not as tangible as we would have liked with the hand-drawn textures. We experimented going with 2.5D.”
