Masahiro Sakurai is back with yet another installment in his game development video series, and today’s installment slots into the ‘Planning and Game Design’ category.

According to Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. is a game where typical rewards don’t entirely make sense, since fighters can’t level up or earn new equipment. However, not having rewards at all wouldn’t feel very satisfying, so Sakurai and his team did their best to compensate players in a few different ways.

Anyone who’s played Smash Bros. knows that as you make your way through the game, you unlock all kinds of digital goodies. Some of them can impact gameplay and others are just for display, but they all add to the sense of satisfaction the player gets.
