The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the biggest videogame movie of all-time, and by an astronomical amount. The film made upwards of $1.36 billion worldwide, setting all kinds of box office records. That included a record for the best opening domestic day for a videogame movie, but that’s one accolade the film has now lost.

As some of you no doubt know, the long-awaited Five Nights at Freddy’s movie made its debut on Friday, and fans showed up in droves to get some scares. The movie was already profitable before it launched due to rights deals, but the box office receipts show even more cash heading the studio’s way.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie took in $39.5 million on its opening day here in the states, earning it the record for the best opening domestic day for a videogame movie. For those wondering, The Super Mario Bros. Movie previously held that record at roughly $31 million, so Five Nights at Freddy’s handily beat it.

This achievement is impressive no matter how you slice it, but it’s even more surprising when you realize Five Nights at Freddy’s premiered both in theaters and streaming at home on the same day. While fans could watch Five Nights at Freddy’s on Peacock day-and-date with the theatrical premiere, it seems most fans chose to enjoy the movie at their local cinemas.
