The last sales update we had on Sonic Frontiers was back in May of this year, which revealed that the game had moved 3.5 million units worldwide. There’s no doubt the game is close to the 4 million mark now, if not above it. Those big sales are what convinced SEGA to go all-out on content updates for the title.

In an interview with Famitsu magazine, Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto and producer Sachiko Kawamura talked about the first 4 weeks of Sonic Frontiers’ release, which is when the game racked up 2.5 million units sold. That ended up being a record for the Sonic series, and surprised many throughout SEGA.

That groundswell of support from Sonic fans across the world is what convinced SEGA to get to work on bigger updates for Sonic Frontiers moving forward. The original plan was to do seasonal updates along the way, but such an explosion in sales at launch led SEGA and Sonic Team to start work on more substantial content for players.
