Masahiro Sakurai is back with another installment in his game development video series. This time around, he’s shared a video that fits into the ‘UI’ category, where he reexamines some of the things we take for granted.

Sakurai says that since GameCube’s development, he suggested multiple times to Nintendo that adding a scrolling wheel in the controller can have its advantages for navigating through lengthy menus. He draws an analogy to the scrolling wheel in computer mice, highlighting its benefits for navigating through web pages.

The scroll wheel would also provide tactile feedback to enhance the user experience. However, he acknowledges the challenges associated with implementing this idea, particularly in terms of accommodating the scroll wheel within the controller’s form factor.
