Nintendo has announced the cancellation of Nintendo Live 2024 Tokyo, which was scheduled for January 20-21, 2024, at the Tokyo Big Sight Convention Center. The decision comes after Nintendo received threats targeting its employees and the spectators, and so they decided to take the safer route since people’s safety takes a much higher priority.
This also means that the Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Online Challenge Final Stage, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe World Championship 2024, and Splatoon Koshien 2023 National Finals will be postponed.
No more details were shared on when the event is planned to return and for how long the tournaments will be postponed. Masahiro Sakurai commented on the event’s cancellation, and you can see his full comments below (h/t Nintendo Pal).
The cancellation of Nintendo Live TOKYO has consequently led to the cancellation of the planned Super Smash Bros. tournament. It’s disheartening to learn that the reason for this cancellation is due to threats.
This situation is not only a disappointment for fans who were eagerly looking forward to the event, but also deeply disheartening when considering the event organizers and all those who had meticulously planned and prepared various aspects of the event. The dampening of spirits is understandable in light of these developments.
