2024 marks 30 years since Earthbound launched on the Super Nintendo. To be more specific, the landmark RPG arrived on the Super Famicom in Japan August 27th, 1994, but it wouldn’t see localization here in the states until June 5th, 1995. Still, we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of the game’s initial launch this year, and it seems fans can expect some festivities in the coming months.

The official MOTHER series X account shared a celebratory message in honor of Earthbound’s 30th anniversary, and it included a tantalizing tidbit for fans. Apparently there are “various plans” being worked on to honor the game’s 3 decades of existence, and an accompanying blog shed some light on what to expect.

While full details on anniversary plans weren’t discussed, an official blog did mention that anniversary merch, a new type of event, a collaborative event, and a measuring stick are all in the works. The blog itself even seems confused by the ‘measuring stick’ mention, but I guess we’ll all have to wait to find out more.

Perhaps most interesting, the blog mentions that a lot of things are being planned and most are almost completed. Specifically, the blog states that (through Google translate) “something has finally been decided and even things that we don’t know what will happen.” In other words, there’s plenty to come that is yet-to-be revealed, and as a major Earthbound fan, that sounds pretty exciting to me!

To celebrate this anniversary, I’d love to see Mother 3 get a Western release, even if it’s through the Switch Online + Expansion Pack, and I’d love to see Earthbound get a remake, like Link’s Awakening for release on Switch later this year, and it’s eminent successor sometime afterward.

An 99 % of it will be Japan only.
