Masahiro Sakurai is back with the latest installment of his game development series, and this one falls into the “Planning and Game Design” category.

Sakurai believes games that let players experiment with abilities or equipment will naturally make them ponder how to most effectively build their character. According to Sakurai, developers should make sure to encourage that kind of thinking.

We’ve certainly seen plenty of developers open up to player customization and expression in recent years, and that definitely includes Nintendo. Giving players a set of tools to work with allows for expansion in all different areas, including ways the developers may have never expected.
