Masahiro Sakurai is back with yet another installment in his game development series. This time around, Sakurai is offering up yet another video that falls into the “Grab Bag” category, meaning it skews a bit outside of his usual topics.

In today’s feature, Sakurai shows us how to create sprites using nothing but lines of data—the origin of pixel art. Sakurai says that back in the day, this is how game developers used to create in-game art!

Nowadays there are all sorts of programs that allow people to create pixel art. Developers and artists simply draw out their desired visuals and those get translated into the game. Decades ago, the situation was quite a bit different, and much more time-consuming!
