In recent years, Nintendo has had quite a bumpy road when it comes to revealing and releasing new hardware. The move from GameCube to Wii was more than perfect, but from Wii to Wii U was a disaster. Nintendo wants to make sure they avoid a situation like this when they move on from Switch to its successor.
During a Nintendo investor Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa detailed the importance of a smooth transition with the next hardware iteration. You can see his full statement on the matter below.
…looking back on past experiences of generational change such as the change from the Wii and Nintendo DS eras, we recognize that one of our tasks is ensuring the transition to future generations of hardware is as smooth as possible. To that end, we are focusing on building long-term relationships with our consumers (through Nintendo Accounts). While continuing to release new Nintendo Switch software for consumers to enjoy, we aim to maintain relationships across hardware generations through services that utilize Nintendo Accounts and by providing opportunities for them to experience our IP through other non-gaming channels.

2y agoYears of high-level research has shown the best way to ensure a smooth transition is to remove all backwards-compatibility, completely dismantle the virtual console and spend five years building a new, smaller one with fewer games than last time (from an industry-differentiating forty-year back catalog, no less), and of course, re-release all the games people lost in that smooth transition so they can buy it a fourth time at full price.
But not Xenoblade X.
Hah, well it worked for Sony in 2013.
