Pokémon hacker arrested in Japan for selling hacked Scarlet/Violet data

The ever-watchful eyes of Pokémon Co. and Nintendo have caught yet another troublemaker, and now they’re in the hands of the law.
A 36-year-old Japanese man was arrested this week for selling hacked Pokémon data for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. This is because modifying save files and distributing edited save data is illegal in Japan under the Unfair Competition Prevention Act. The man had been selling this hacked data since all the way back in December of 2022.
The man behind these hacks was selling the data for roughly $90 each, so he was making quite a healthy amount of cash for his efforts. Once the man was apprehended, he admitted that he was behind the hacks and sales, and he did so to earn a living. While there’s no final number yet, police suspect the hacker brought in millions of yen from his sales.
