Those who saw Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness might have experienced a bit of déjà vu when seeing the new trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns today. The thing is, the team behind the game had no clue what was going to be in Dr. Strange’s latest movie.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns creative director Jake Solomon is well aware that his game and the latest MCU movie share a few similar story beats. Without getting into spoilers or specifics, both projects put a focus on the Darkhold spellbook. Believe it or not, Solomon says this was a complete coincidence. He opened up on the topic in an interview with PC Gamer.

“[The overlap] was a total surprise, but it was both a surprise and not a surprise to me. There was no collaboration at all, but there are some powerful ideas in Marvel, and so even when we were coming up with our story, we were like, ‘Eh, are they really not going to use the Darkhold at some point?’ It was just a matter of time before some of these ideas were going to come out.”

While both projects feature the Darkhold, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is very much crafting a different experience. To see how unique the adventure is, we’ll have to wait for the Switch version to make its way to retail.
