After a long wait, Tribute Games and Dotemu finally released TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. The game, a throwback beat’em-up, was welcomed with great review from the press and tons of praise from gamers. There’s no doubt a heavy helping of nostalgia fuels the fun, but TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge manages to push the genre forward and provide a worth successor to past TMNT games at the same time.

At first glance, you wouldn’t think too much is going on under the hood (shell?) of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, but making a game look retro in a convincing way can be a challenging task! In the video above the Digital Foundry team tears the game open to see what makes it tick, and we get more insight into the game’s tech aspects than ever before. Even for a game that looks like it’s been ripped straight out of the 90s, there’s some surprising stuff at work here.
