Super Mario Bros. 2 was an extremely important game for Nintendo. The NES was a certified hit in the states, and Nintendo fever was sweeping the nation. Mario was becoming a household name, and Nintendo knew that Mario’s next big outing had to be something special. That’s where Super Mario Bros. 2 comes into play.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is very different from the original Super Mario Bros., but that uniqueness clicked with American audiences in a big way. That might have something to do with Nintendo Power, which put Super Mario Bros. 2 front-and-center on its very first issue.

In the latest episode of NES Works, Jeremy Parish looks back at the one-two punch of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Nintendo Power to show just how important one was to the other. It’s a big part of Nintendo history, and one that influences the Mario franchise to this day!
