Masahiro Sakurai is back with another video for his ‘Creating Games’ series, and this one focuses on how developers can get the most out of their assets in games. In particular, Sakurai focuses on the importance of lighting on objects and scenery.

While creating a nice-looking object is definitely a good place to start, Sakurai stresses that you shouldn’t just create the asset and call it a day. Plopping it down into an environment with varied lighting can make an incredible difference, especially if you apply your approach in multiple ways.

In today’s video, Sakurai shows off how a simple image of a tree can be brought to life through lighting, both as a way to make colors pop and to give the surrounding environment life. A simple approach, but one that can yield impressive results.
