As was previously reported, the next Splatfest for Splatoon 3 asks the question, “What would you bring with you to a deserted island? Gear? Grub? Or fun?”.

While the Splatfest itself doesn’t start until Sept. 23rd, the official Japanese Twitter account for Splatoon gave us an explanation of “conch shells” and how they can benefit you for the Splatfest. The following explanation is translated by Amiibofan101 from Reddit.

Right now, we are in what they call a “Splatfest Sneak Peek” period, which is the period between the announcement of the Splatfest and the date of the festival (in this case, it’s Sep. 23rd). During this period, you can pick your side and benefit your team by raising your catalog level and receiving “conch shells,” collecting these shells will actually affect the final results of the Splatfest, even if you don’t attend the event, so technically, the fight starts from now.

Furthermore, you can spend the conch shells you gather in the lobby for a chance to win items for Splashtags and lockers from the Shell-Out-Machine.
