The next big game from Kazutaka Kodaka, creator of the Danganronpa series, is Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE, which was revealed during last week’s Nintendo Direct. This dark fantasy detective action game is sure to win over the hearts of Danganronpa fans, and hopefully it finds an even wide audience, as the team has been working on it for quite some time.

While Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE was only just revealed, it turns out the game has been in the works for 5 years! Kodaka elaborated on this in an interview with Nintendo Life.

This project started while I was still at Spike Chunsoft about five years ago. Spike Chunsoft helped develop RAIN CODE, and while I was working on Danganronpa I didn’t utilise 3D, whereas the Spike Chunsoft development team had worked on tangentially related titles and they supervised on 3D. This time, I was able to work with this team and that’s how we were able to incorporate the 3D part. It’s a great time.

This project is extra special for Kodaka, as it’s the first game since Danganronpa where he’s tackling the scenario writing and directing himself.

I didn’t directly write the scenarios or give the directions on those titles, so this is really the first game since Danganronpa where I’m doing the scenario writing and directing. So it’s been a while since I’ve penned all these words. Since Danganronpa, I’ve been publishing a lot of video games. It’s been five years, so I had a lot of emotions to put into the project.

Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE is set for Switch release sometime in 2023. We’ll bring you specifics on the release timing when they become available.
