RUMOR: Bayonetta 3 was planned to be semi-open world
image

A new report from Imran Khan claims that at one point in the developement process, Bayonetta 3 was intended to be a semi-open world game. Khan states that the game “was announced very early” and the pandemic as well as the director leaving left early development of the title in a rather precarious position. However, one of the main reasons the game took so long to release according to Imran is that “at one point in development, Bayonetta 3 was scoped as a semi-open world game.”

The design was going to draw more off Astral Chain than Nier Automata, but the idea was that a large hub world would send Bayonetta (or whoever else) to different worlds which would themselves be fairly open. Maybe Super Mario 64 would be a good reference point for this. There was a lot of work and experimentation on this idea, but it kept falling apart when it came to pacing, and eventually Nintendo wanted them to scale back. It was, I hear, also not particularly well-performing on the Switch hardware either.

[Imran Khan]

It’s rather interesting that the game would have been a bit more Super Mario 64 and Astral Chain-like. Those who have played the game can definitely tell that the scope was meant to be larger and whether or not that would’ve been fun is sort of in the eyes of the beholder. Having finished Bayonetta 3, I certainly am glad they kept it mostly to the same format because the larger spaces for exploring would have, in my opinion, detracted from the appeal of the series - the combat. Either way, it’s certainly an interesting tidbit and we’d love to hear what you think about this, so sound off!

Digital Foundry's tech review of Persona 5 Royal's new release

The tech wizards at Digital Foundry strike again with a meaty breakdown of Persona 5 Royal’s new multi-platform release. The breakdown includes every new version including Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC. But given the site you’re currently on, let’s breakdown a few of the Nintendo Switch version’s highlights:

  • Despite the large file size cutbacks - the visuals retain most of the intended effects.
  • Resolutions - Docked: 1440x810 and Handheld: 960x540
  • Framerate: A completely stable 30 FPS (based on the first 8 hours)
  • Short loading times
  • Small animation issues were present during recording but seem to be gone as of the recent Switch firmware update

Overall it seems like SEGA took a lot of care in making sure Persona 5 Royal runs consistently well on Nintendo Switch. Other Atlus titles do run at slightly higher resolutions but at the caveat of inconsistent framerates. Overall this seems like a great conversion to Switch and is a great way to experience the iconic JRPG.

Are you happy with the performance on Switch? Have you played Persona 5 Royal or are you playing it for the first time? If you’re new to the series maybe consider giving our Beginner’s Guide to Modern Persona a read-through!

Sonic Frontiers review embargo lift time

We have a deadline for the Sonic Frontiers review embargo! According to Sonic Stadium’s Dreadknux, we can expect to see reviews start flowing in around Monday - November 7th, 2022 at 6:00 AM PT. Do you have high hops for positive reviews? It’s certainly been an interesting marketing cycle for the game going from the rather tepid reception in June to the almost palpable excitement leading up to the November 8th release.

Early copies have also seemingly leaked out to retailers so beware of spoilers as those are bound to be rampant amongst social media users who got lucky. That being said, early impressions have been mostly positive and that’s encouraging to hear! Are you excited for Sonic Frontiers and will you be picking it up? Let us know!

NFL Blitz returns with new Arcade1Up machine - available now

Bring back the hype of the N64 & Arcade classic!

NFL Blitz returns with new Arcade1Up machine - available now

Despite the grumpy looking man (Hall of Fame Quarterback: Dan Marino) in the thumbnail, the return of NFL Blitz in Arcade1Up form is rather exciting news! Announced a few months ago but now available for purchase on Arcade1Up’s website. The mini-sized (comparatively) arcade cabinet includes 4-player support so classic homies like myself can relive those heated NFL Blitz matches from the N64 days. That is to say - if I had $600 to spend. There’s a trailer for it as well as gameplay clips if you’re interested in seeing the classic in action!

Are you going to be picking this up? It’s certainly a fun way to bring the classic but the price is definitely not something I could afford. Perhaps since they’re able to rerelease in Arcade1Up form, we could see the N64 version make its way to the eShop or maybe even Nintendo Switch Online+Expansion Pass? It’s merely speculation but it would be nice to see.

Pokemon Company teases news with cryptic box website

The Pokemon Twitter account has revealed a new website that seems to be teasing something new for the upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet games. It’s fair to say it’ll most likely be a new Pokemon but we won’t know until 6:00 AM PT according to the official Pokemon Twitter!

This has certainly been an interesting hype cycle for the upcoming games with a new Pokemon reveal coming every few days. Are you excited for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? What do you think is in the box? And do you think this could be a teaser for an Out of the Box revival? I certainly hope it’s that last one but I severely doubt it.

Lethal Honor - Order of the Apocalypse announced for Switch

A new rogue-lite brings on the hype-ocalypse

Lethal Honor - Order of the Apocalypse announced for Switch

From developer HandyGames and publisher THQ Nordic comes a new rogue-lite with a edgy twist - Lethal Honor-Order of the Apocalypse. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic world styled after grim and dark 1980s comics it certainly seems frantic and edgy in all the right ways. Here’s what HandyGames themselves has to say about it:

Slay hordes of eldritch creatures in relentless isometric close quarter battles with an art style reminiscent of the 1980s dark age of adult superhero graphic novels. Set in a shady and beset post-apocalyptic world you play various characters to unfold a complex story. With countless abilities, a dozen combat styles, and several secondary mechanics, every run is like a new issue of a comic book series!

Lethal Honor’s progression model is a new take on rogue-lites. Select comic panels are seamlessly integrated into the gameplay to structure your routes passing procedural runs. With every run and every death, you come closer to waking one of the main characters each with their own story to play. Kill or be killed, run or be run over, give in return but never give up!

[HandyGames]

While no release date is given, this is certainly shaping up to be a rather fun romp with a unique style. Definitely something to look forward to whenever it launches whether this year or next.
