Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is a new Metroidvania game that was announced back in 2022 and is being developed by Squid Shock. During today’s Humble Games Showcase, it was announced that the game is now releasing in 2024, instead of this year as it was shared before. While the new date hasn’t been specified for Switch yet, we can assume it will be the same one as for PC.
In the meantime and if you are interested, don’t miss out on the game’s description and trailer in this article!
Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is a hand-drawn 2D Metroidvania platformer based in a colorful world of Japanese folklore. Use your legendary bō staff to bounce and move fluidly through a delightfully-demonic East Asian fever dream. Use the tight movement and reset system to reach areas efficiently and gracefully or recover chaotically while floundering for footing.
A familiar 2D side-scrolling action platformer that merges classic hand-drawn animation and scenery with new atmospheric bells and whistles that make the experience wondrously novel yet cozily familiar.
Tight platforming controls. Bō feels amazing to control and players will feel great agency as they enter a flow state navigating the challenging platforming challenges. Explore a mysterious world! The world of Bō is open and interconnected. Explore everything from haunted bathhouses to a thriving Japanese-inspired metropolis. Find ways to travel back to areas that you thought you explored fully and unlock new paths and surprises.
Unlock powerful new abilities! Brew and drink arcane teas to unlock Bō’s shapeshifting staff abilities. Including the Mochi Mallet, Blossom Dash and the Grappling Gun.
Daruma doll Power ups! Collect daruma dolls throughout your journey to tune your abilities and give you advantages (or even disadvantages) in unique ways. All daruma dolls begin with 1 eye filled in. They can be upgraded to a 2-eyed daruma that enhances the original daruma’s perk. These loveable daruma dolls will be by your side throughout your journey.
A large cast of bizarre and adorable yokai (monsters from Japanese folklore) as well as original characters based on Japanese cultural archetypes. All of these characters and enemies are brought to life with traditional hand-drawn 2D frame-by-frame animation. Help them with their side quests or just stop by for a chat and a cup of tea.
Epic Boss Battles! On your journey you will encounter many massive monsters from Japanese folklore. Use your gained knowledge and skill to vanquish them and advance further in your quest.
Beautiful hand-drawn and immersive areas and landscapes with traditional Japanese inspired trimmings.
An absolutely gorgeous original score composed by Moises Carmago, that beautifully blends traditional Japanese instrumentation with modern orchestral music.

Comparison: TLOZ Breath of the Wild Vs. Tears of the Kingdom
More than just an upgrade
Since Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild and the game takes place in the same world, comparison videos were bound to be plenty, showcasing the differences between both titles.
In this video by ‘ElAnalistaDeBits’, they focus on draw distance, loading times, FPS, and more. Don’t miss out on it if you are curious about how the two games compare!
Notes from the comment section of the video:
- TOTK runs at 900p dynamic and 720p dynamic on handheld. It usually stays at that resolution, but can drop to 792p.
- There are some issues with implementing temporal reconstruction (FSR) in TOTK, randomly triggering dynamic resolution when, technically, it should not.
- TOTK fixes the stuttering problems that dragged Breath of the Wild in specific areas, but has framerate problems if we use the powers in areas with too much graphic load or when there are too many npcs on screen.
- These framerate problems can cause drops of up to 20fps. Nintendo should work on this mainly.
- Longer drawing distance in shadows compared to breath of the wild. Vegetation and geometry LOD have also been slightly increased.
- The sun has changed its position in TOTK. The general illumination has been retouched and improved.
- Some areas are almost unrecognizable with respect to BOTW given the large amount of assets and new structures added.
- Improvements in some textures.
- Less grass density in some areas with respect to BOTW.
- Faster loading times in TOTK in fast travel, but faster in BOTW when starting the game.
- Improved water and splash quality.
- Overall, TOTK is some of the most technically meritorious games I’ve seen on Switch. However, the performance at certain times tarnishes the experience considerably.
- This review was conducted with version 1.1.0 of the game. A performance review will be done in the following patches.

If you are into building simulation games, then look no further than Urbek City Builder to create the city of your dreams! Choose from different biomes, build unique buildings, and gather resources to put together a place that you can call your own.
If you are interested in the game, you can get it from the eShop here for $15.19 (Regular Price: $18.99).
New type of city building game. There is no money in Urbek. Instead, you will have to build everything with your own resources, such as food, coal, or skilled work.
In Urbek, you will be able to build a city of your own design! Manage its natural resources, improve the quality of life of the population, and build its neighbourhoods in your own way.
Neighbourhoods
Breathe life into your city by building different neighbourhoods. Do you want a bohemian neighbourhood? Build bars, parks and libraries, but keep a low population density nearby. Do you want a bourgeois neighbourhood? You need parks and luxury shops.
Manage
There is no money in Urbek. Instead, you will have to build everything with your own resources, such as food, coal, or skilled work. There are more than 30 different resources to manage! Manage your natural resources well, so that they do not run out before they can be replaced. How will you choose to produce the energy for your inhabitants and industries?
Educate
Education is fundamental! By producing enough qualified work and scientific work, you will be able to build more advanced buildings.
Observe
Move around at street level in order to get a more intimate sense of the city you are creating. See and feel the differences between neighborhoods the way your city’s residents do!
Organic growth
The growth of your city will be organic. Some constructions will appear according to the surrounding conditions. For example, buildings with more than two floors will appear in densely populated areas and with basic services.
You can place other buildings by yourself, but they need some conditions. For instance, the local market needs to be close to the farms. The university should have some high schools nearby, which, in turn, require nearby schools.
When it comes to designing your city, you have a variety of viable options. There are no buildings that are superior to others. Every decision will have its pros and cons. Bourgeois houses consume more food and need resources that cost more to produce, but will improve the quality of life of the residents there. On the other hand, improving the productivity of industries will produce more resources, but will diminish the quality of life for residents living in the area.
